Open Source Software refers to software that has been released into the public in such a way that allows anyone to view the source code that makes the software and modify it and contribute it back to the public. These programs are simply referred to as open source programs. Operating systems like Linux and the majority of its programs are open source. There are also several open source programs available for other operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS X and for use on websites.

The majority of open source software has a reputation for being high quality and very stable.
