Linux is a computer operating system (OS) first developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991. It is currently the 3rd most popular computer operating system platform in the world, behind Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh. The most significant aspect and the major attraction to it is that it is Open Source Software and is not controlled by any one company. It grew significantly throughout the 1990s in features and userbase and continues to gain acceptance and users today.
How is it used
Linux is used heavily on the Internet as a server OS as well as a lot of consumer home devices like the Tivo PVR and . There are also many people using it as a desktop OS as well including many people working for Suso as well as some of its users.
There are many distributions of Linux with various focuses. For instance, Ubuntu is a recent distribution that has become very popular as a desktop platform whereas Red Hat Enterprise Linux is mostly used on servers.
Relation to Suso
Linux and Suso share a birthday in that Linux was released to the public on September 17th, 1991 and Suso opened its office doors to the public on September 17th, 2004. This was intentionally done as Suso offers Linux support and promotes Linux usage.
